For decades, power, phone and other utility poles have been treated with Pentachlorophenol, typically in a light fuel solution which aids in the penetration of the Pentachlorophenol into the poles. Dioxins are a byproduct of the manufacturing of Pentachlorophenol. Additionally, Chromate Copper Arsenate and Creosote have be used in the treatment of poles.
This is necessary in order to maintain structural integrity by preventing deterioration and decaying of the poles. These treatments were done prior to shipment of the poles to the end user, however, the materials used in the treatments never fully cure and therefore, bleed toxins throughout the life of the pole.
Pole storage throughout the US is commonly done outside where crews have easy access to select a pole and continue to the job site. These areas are exposed to the various elements throughout the years and with the poles typically rotated out of inventory on a regular basis, subject these areas to contamination from the various chemicals utilized in the pole preservation.
Brows beneath the poles are typically exposed earthen materials which are impacted and require remediation prior to exchange of property ownership and/or maturing of a lease.
Various States have various requirements and therefore, most sites will require some extent of remedial activity prior to the responsible party being able to obtain indemnification. This may be required prior to discontinued use of the property for its original intent (pole brow) or if the levels of contamination exceed the State standards at any time during operation.
Granite Environmental, Inc. provides the services and knowledge necessary to obtain a satisfactory clean up standard which will work towards the indemnification of the responsible party liabilities for the contamination.
With extremely low regulatory limitations with regards to Dioxin, in some states in the parts per trillion (ng/Kg) it is imperative that you select the right contractor the first time to assure proper remediation.
